Specifying Translucent Backlit Wall Panels: A Sector-by-Sector Guide
A translucent backlit wall turns a flat surface into a soft, even light source. It can make a reception feel like a destination, give a spa wall a gentle glow or turn a windowless corridor into something that reads like daylight. This guide covers what to decide at specification stage, and how the brief changes from one sector to the next.
The system in brief
A translucent stretch membrane is tensioned across a perimeter profile fixed to the wall, with LED modules mounted behind it. The membrane diffuses the light into an even glow with no joins or visible fixings. PVC translucent membranes are moisture-resistant and 100% recyclable; membranes can also be UV printed, so a backlit wall can carry imagery or brand graphics.

Five decisions to make early
Build-out depth: the gap between LEDs and membrane controls how even the glow looks. Agree it before the wall line is fixed.
Light and control: static white, tunable white or colour-changing, and the control system it connects to.
Finish: plain translucent or printed.
Fire evidence: request the EN 13501-1 classification report for the chosen membrane and confirm it suits the building use and location.
Access: plan where drivers sit and how they can be reached for maintenance.
How the brief changes by sector
Offices and workplaces
Backlit walls give receptions and breakout spaces a clear focal point and can bring a daylight quality to internal rooms. Keep brightness comfortable near screens, and treat reverberation separately: a lighting membrane is not an acoustic absorber, so pair it with acoustic ceilings where noise is a concern.
Hospitality, spas and pools
Here atmosphere leads. Moisture-resistant PVC membranes suit humid spaces, and tunable or colour-changing light lets one wall work from morning to evening.
Healthcare
A printed landscape or sky on a backlit wall can make treatment and waiting areas feel less clinical. Where hygiene is a priority, ask about our antiseptic and BioPruf membrane variants.
Retail and showrooms
Printed backlit walls carry brand graphics at architectural scale, and the membrane can be replaced when a campaign changes.
High-end residential
Feature walls in cinemas, bathrooms and basements, often combined with a matching stretch ceiling for one continuous design language.
