Backlit Stretch Ceilings: Designing with a Ceiling That Glows

2 min read

A backlit ceiling replaces scattered fittings with one evenly lit surface. Done well, it reads less like a light and more like a skylight: soft, shadow-free and calm. Done badly, you see hotspots, shadows from the frame and LED dots through the membrane. The difference comes down to the membrane, the light source behind it and the coordination around it.

How a backlit stretch ceiling is built

A translucent stretch membrane is tensioned across a perimeter profile, with LED light modules mounted in the void above. The membrane diffuses the light so the whole surface glows evenly. Because the membrane is seamless and tensioned, the finish has no joins, no grid and no visible fixings, and it can follow curves and three-dimensional shapes as well as flat planes.

  • PVC translucent membranes: moisture-resistant, so suitable for bathrooms, pools and spas, and 100% recyclable.

  • Polyester light membranes: a fabric-like finish installed cold, useful for large spans and refurbishments.

  • Printed membranes: high-definition UV printing for skies, artwork or brand graphics that light up from behind.

Getting an even glow

  • Void depth: the distance between light source and membrane drives uniformity. Confirm the available depth before design freeze.

  • Colour temperature and control: decide early whether the ceiling is static white, tunable or colour-changing, and which control system it ties into.

  • Maintenance access: plan where drivers sit and how they are reached.

  • Fire evidence: ask for the EN 13501-1 classification report for the specific membrane, and check it covers your build-up.

Lighting and acoustics in the same room

A translucent lighting membrane is not an acoustic absorber. If the room also needs reverberation control, there are two good routes: our NT100A panel, which combines lighting and acoustic absorption in one unit, or a backlit feature combined with acoustic stretch ceiling areas elsewhere in the room. Our polyester acoustic stretch is tested to Class A (αw 1.00), and that absorption data feeds your acoustician's BB93 or BREEAM calculations.

Where backlit ceilings work best

  • Hotel lobbies, spas and pool halls that need atmosphere.

  • Retail and showrooms, where a printed backlit ceiling reinforces the brand.

  • Healthcare and treatment rooms, where a sky print can make clinical spaces calmer.

  • Basements and windowless rooms in high-end homes.
