The depth of the void, LED spacing, output and diffuser properties must be considered as one system.
An evenly illuminated wall generally needs enough depth between LEDs and membrane to blend individual points of light. Very shallow build-ups can be possible, but they demand careful coordination and may limit uniformity or service access. A deeper build-up can provide a smoother field of light, though it takes more room from the floorplate. In a narrow retail unit, that trade-off may shape the decision.
Lighting controls should follow the operational brief. Dimming allows the wall to recede during bright trading hours and become more present for launches or evening hospitality. If the showroom has changing natural light, a fixed high-output setting can look unnecessarily harsh at certain times of day. Coordination with the lighting designer is essential, particularly where the feature wall sits alongside track lighting, pendants or decorative fittings.
Colour temperature should support the products in front of it. Warm lighting may flatter timber and upholstered furniture, while cooler settings can suit a more technical or gallery-like presentation. There is no universal correct setting. Build the graphic around the wall geometry
A backlit membrane offers scope for printing, but the strongest printed walls are designed at architectural scale. A beautiful image can fail when a key visual element lands behind a reception desk, is interrupted by a socket, or is cropped by a door reveal.
Start with an elevation showing every fixed obstruction, including signage, sprinkler positions, access panels and adjacent shelving. Then review the artwork at the actual wall size. This reveals whether a texture becomes too busy, whether a logo is correctly positioned, and whether a photographic image has sufficient resolution for the finished dimensions.
Edge detailing is equally important. A printed surface can lose its impact if the perimeter frame, adjoining cladding or ceiling line feels unresolved. In some schemes, a narrow dark reveal creates a precise border around the illuminated field. In others, taking the membrane close to the surrounding surface gives a more monolithic result. The right answer depends on whether the feature wall should read as an object, a backdrop or part of a continuous interior plane.
Treat acoustic performance as part of the brief
Showrooms often contain hard finishes: glazing, porcelain, polished concrete, stone, timber display units and exposed services. These materials can produce a lively acoustic environment, particularly when several client conversations happen at once. A visually impressive feature wall does not automatically improve this condition.
